But even with a lower price tag, we predict we still won’t be able to afford one.

With luxury car purchases taking a hit since the recession hit, and über-luxury brands seeing an even deeper dip in sales, Lamborghini has come up with a brilliant – though almost blasphemous – idea: a cheaper car.

“We are going to have a third model. It has to be an everyday car. We want to have a car which is able to be used on a daily basis,” Lambo’s CEO Stephan Winkelmann told Reuters. Bolstered by increasing demand from emerging nations – the company expects to sell 1 out of 5 Lamborghinis this year to China alone – they are looking to produce a model that’s more accessible for the everyman.

Winkelmann estimates such a car can be designed, manufactured and on the market within four years, but he didn’t speculate about cost. But given Lamborghini’s current price points, NewsFeed isn’t optimistic about adding one to our garage anytime soon.

Adding a model to their product line would be something of a windfall for the manufacturer: they only have two cars currently in production. The soon-to-be-released Aventador sells for a mind-boggling $379,700 – that’s the average cost of a single-family home in San Diego, but then again, your house won’t do zero to 60 in 2.9 seconds with 700 horsepower behind it.

And Lamborghini’s “low-end” model (if we may be so pejorative), the Gallardo, starts at $205,000 The much-loved Murciélago was recently taken out of production, which leads Lamborghini to look for a more family-friendly replacement. No word if this one will be able to fit a child seat, though.
